MODERN GREEK HISTORY
The history of modern Greece starts from the pivotal point of the Greek revolution against Ottoman rule (1821) and includes the Greek struggle for independence, and the establishment of the autonomous Greek state (1828), until today.
The Greek Revolution was one of the turning points of 19th-century European history, as it was the starting point for the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, which was in decline anyway.
Until 1453 the Greeks were part of the Greek-speaking and Orthodox Byzantium. After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans in 1453, the Greeks effectively came under Ottoman rule.
Oppressed and enslaved, being aware of their differences in language and religion, they developed the perception of their national identity.
After seven years of hard and bloody struggle, the creation of an independent Greek state marked the successful outcome of a national revolution of a people with a glorious past, which had been enslaved for centuries.
This fact did not only concern the Greeks.
It provoked the manifestation of liberal sentiments in other enslaved peoples, particularly in the Balkans, who were seeking independence. This victory influenced the great powers to accept and act favorably towards the Greeks and marked the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire's rule.
